Brick Paving
Complements of Ziegler's Landscape By Design
Your new patio, walk, or driveway is generally maintenance free. There are times it may need some attention over the years. These are a few easy tips for some of the common problems.

Sprinkle Diazinon or similar ant killer on the nest and around the perimeter of the paving. Allow a day or two for the ants to carry the poison into their nest. After there is no more ant activity, sweep the sand back in between the bricks. |
|
Your paving has 6 to 12" of base and 1" of washed sand beneath. Weeds will not grow in this subsurface. Weeds grow when the cracks of the pavers fill up with soil. The easiest is to clean the cracks with a jet setting on your hose. Then, after the paving is dry, sweep new silica sand back into the cracks. |

What is efflorescence? Efflorescence is the white "frost" that sometimes appears on the concrete pavers. Just be patient. Efflorescence will go away. The "frost" eventually will dissolve in the presence of rainwater and carbon dioxide, and wash away, but it takes a little time. |

This might occur more frequently on newly constructed homes because the sub-grade around the house is still settling. If for some reason the sand has washed out, the bricks have slid out of place or the brick edging has moved, please give us a call. The good thing about brick is that it can be reused...Concrete would have to be replaced. |
